“The soil in our vineyard has been compared to the best Gris regions in France”


Far Ago Hill Wines was established in 2003 in Canyonleigh, a southern highlands NSW locality that is emerging as a premium cool climate wine-growing region. The vineyard was planted with the intention to produce a wine equal in quality to that of the best Pinot Gris regions in Europe

Ricardo Farago and Katrina Hill toured Europe tasting different styles of Pinot Gris sourced in various regions, from the full and fruity to minerally and “funky”. They decided to search for a piece of land where they could grow their favourite white wine, and relax and enjoy a country lifestyle.

The rocky sandy loam soil on a clay base, situated 750 m above sea level, in a “rain shadow” area, is perfect for grape growing, as vines traditionally like to “struggle”. Soil, climate and the elements combine to form what the French call “terroir”. And the Canyonleigh terroir is becoming recognised as being capable of producing disease free outstanding cold climate boutique wines.

After planting, high calibre viticultural practices were implemented, including use of organic compounds, minimal irrigation and constant hand tending of the vines.

The end wine/result is due to a combination of nature, an experienced consultant, and an outstanding winemaker.

Since 2011 vintage, we have been known as Far Ago Hill Wines. The key people in our production are:

Katrina Hill (Vigneron)

Katrina is a Sydney based interior designer and colour consultant with a passion for wide vistas, big skies and wine. What started as a small weekend retreat in 2001, became a passionate affair with the land. When she is not colouring or designing, she is working in the vineyard, either manually, or using the good “toys” (tractor, bobcat, slashers and sprayers).


Nick O’Leary (Winemaker)

Nick O’Leary makes our Pinot Gris. He is a talented and awarded individual winemaker who brings innovative style to make good grapes become great wine.


Doug Ross (Bio Dynamic Consultant)

Doug has experience in broad acre and specialist farming, and brings his bio dynamic chemistry and experience to our vineyard, and farm.  His belief in returning to poison-free agriculture and building the soil to create “healthy children” i.e. our vines, has revolutionised the health of our vineyard and its disease resistance.
